Additional information

This research reports state-of-the-art sensing capabilities using optical fibre distributed feedback lasers. The research work directly led to a three-year international collaboration between the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), involving Dr Gordon Flockhart who was then employed at the NRL, and the Defence Science and Technology Organisation (DSTO), Australia. The collaboration, which was funded by the US Navy International Programs Office, focussed on achieving further understanding of the fundamental noise limits of optical fibre cavities as part of DSTO’s underwater acoustic sensing programme [Group Leader Sensors, DSTO: scott.foster@dsto.defence.gov.au].
