Additional information

This interdisciplinary paper [Engineering/Mathematics/Chemistry] presents theoretical analysis of a new tapered approach to matching layer design and can offer significant enhancements in transducer performance, 5-fold increase in sensitivity bandwidth product, applicable across a wide array of piezoelectric transducer and transducer array technologies. This advancement resulted in new research directions to create materials technologies to facilitate manufacture [doi: 10.1121/1.3483734] and the methodology is a key aspect of an EPSRC project, 2011-14 [EP/I019731/1, £264k] with an industrial focus to apply new techniques to methods of non-destructive evaluation [tony.dunhill@rolls-royce.com].
