Additional information

This paper conclusively demonstrates the correlation between the toxicant yields from the bench-scale steady state tube furnace with those from large-scale fires. Hitherto, it was believed that the only way to quantify fire effluent toxicity, was to run a full-scale fire test. In effect this meant that the largest cause of death in fire was ignored by manufacturers, regulators and the public, because of the prohibitive cost of such tests. It is cited in both ISO 19700 and also ISO 22903, where much of the data is reproduced. This has implications for global regulation of fire toxicity.
