An adaptive, fully implicit multigrid phase-field model for the quantitative simulation of non-isothermal binary alloy solidification
<27>Describes the first use of fully implicit time-stepping for non-linear partial differential systems modelling non-isothermal binary alloy solidification. Made possible due to the adaptive multigrid techniques developed: allowing the first quantitative simulations for parameter values of physical importance. Led to: subsequent papers (10.1103/PhysRevE.79.030601 and 10.1016/j.jcrysgro.2010.03.009) pushing the parameter regime (Lewis number) further to allow additional physical effects to be studied; follow-on EPSRC grants extending to 3-D (EP/F010354/1) and multiple solid phases (EP/H048685/1); ~10 international plenary invitations at academic/industrial conferences; citations by leading groups in China, Korea and Japan; open source software from 2012 (http://www.digital.leeds.ac.uk/software.html, ~10 users and growing).
