Based on five years of field and archival research in Europe, Iran, Rwanda and South Africa. Interviews, visits to memorial sites, and accessing primary sources were difficult and time-consuming. Archival research involved periods of study in over a dozen media and print archives, libraries and museums. Drawing together, sifting and analyzing this diverse material both while abroad and on return to the UK resulted in a complex argument, and took a considerable amount of time.
