This paper describes state of the art photogrammetry and mixed reality immersive tools developed during a three year collaborative multidisciplinary project consisting of 11 European institutions. The goal of the Venus (Virtual Exploration of Underwater Sites) project was to make underwater archaeological sites more accessible by generating thorough, exhaustive 3D records for virtual exploration. This work was funded by a European Framework 6 grant valued at €2.2m, Chapman was awarded £201k for his part of the research. Chapman sat on the Executive Board of four Directors for the entire project and the outputs for the work were substantial including: 6 journal publications, 33 conference publications, two PhD thesis and two special workshops. Related outputs from this work by Chapman include winning the highly prestigious 2009 UK IT Awards ‘UK Innovative Project of the Year Award’, the University of Hull’s ‘Vice Chancellors Award for Outstanding Contributions in 2008’ and significant and prominent media outputs including a special article on Sky, BBC and ABC News channels.
