The book is based on in-depth archival research carried out in a number of locations, including the British Library, Senate House Library, the BL Newspaper Archive (Colindale), at Durham University and the University of Freiburg (Germany). I undertook a comprehensive survey of short fiction addressing the war c.1914-2000, scrutinising and collecting material from a vast array of magazine back numbers and anthologies, both current and out-of-print. The material consulted was difficult to find and also time-consuming to access.
