Additional information

Data-assimilation is essential for ocean modelling but is computationally expensive because of the large dimensionality of the problems. This paper presents a reduced order model, developed for an unstructured mesh ocean model. This method represents the dynamics of the system with a smaller number of degrees of freedom. This work led to 1) a £789k EPSRC grant being awarded to Imperial (EP/I00405X, 2010-2013) on multi-scale free surface regional ocean modelling, 2) a NERC international collaboration grant (NE/J015938/1-£230k), 3) Invited seminars at the following Chinese institutions:- CAS Institute of Atmospheric Physics, Universities of Wuhan, Tsinghua and Zhejiang.
