Finite strain, finite rotation quadratic tetrahedral element for the combined finite-discrete element method
This is an important extension of finite discrete element technology pioneered by Munjiza, to include an extended finite element library and was funded by EPSRC (GR/S42699/01, £800k). This led to an invited international keynote at Particles 2013 (Stuttgart, 300+ delegates). It also led to further work in which the technology is extended to shell elements which are important for glass fracture with industrial applications for automotive and structure glass and blast damage. The shell element has also been incorporated into novel open-source software (Y-cgles) and used to model red blood cells leading to major grant funding (NIHR Turbocardia £900k).
