This peer reviewed academic journal article contributes to the field of Human-Computer Interaction (HCI). HCI represents the intersection between computer science, design and the social and behavioural sciences. ‘Third paradigm’ HCI research as reported in this paper is a recent trend within HCI research within which the experiential aspects of design are prioritised. (The previous two paradigms refer to the importance of (1) person-computer fit, and (2) understanding cognitive processes during interaction.) The research presented in this paper introduces to the HCI community the ‘sensory ethnographic’ approach developed at Loughborough University. The paper illustrates how this approach can inform 3rd paradigm HCI and a interactive digital application concept is presented to illustrate this relationship.
