Additional information

Carotid arterial plaque need not be a matter of grave concern as long as there is little risk of the plaque rupturing. If the plaque does rupture then it can lead to thrombosis and stroke which is one of the leading causes of death in the world. This paper uses high resolution in vivo MRI and computational modelling to analyse the stress in plaques from 20 patients. Comparisons of the stress analysis in symptomatic and no-symptomatic patients, especially the distribution of stress, can be helpful in the identification of patients with high risk of rupture.
