Additional information

This paper resulted from an EPSRC collaborative project between Universities of Cambridge, Nottingham and Cranfield, and Rolls-Royce plc and other industrial companies were invited to participate. McMillan was at the time of the research, an employee of Rolls-Royce aresponsible for coordinating research and technology acquisition, particularly regarding strength of composite materials. This paper made use of experimental data collected during the project to validate an approximate method for impact analysis; this method enables a first approximation assessment to be performed rapidly with limited computer hardware, while the full component validation typically requires a month of supercomputing power to assess.
