Double-weighted statement

Shakespeare’s Comedies (120,000 words) is an exceptionally detailed critical study of the ten comedies Shakespeare wrote during his first decade as a dramatist. It provides close and full new readings of each play, which together constitute a radical reappraisal of Shakespearean comedy and a deliberate departure from the assumptions, methods and objectives of conventional academic studies of Shakespeare. The case for its double weighting rests on its having generated over a lengthy period a particularly extensive, complex and original thesis about its subject through the fresh analysis and comprehensive reinterpretation of a considerable body of primary material.
