Additional information

The essay collection, edited by Giebelhausen and Barringer, brings together established and emerging scholars and presents the first ever critical engagement with the textual construction of the notion of Pre-Raphaelitism. It explores the art movement’s avant-garde strategies, avant-la-lettre, an approach subsequently made more widely accessible in Tate Britain's 2011 international exhibition, The Pre-Raphaelites: A Victorian Avant-garde, co-curated by Barringer. Giebelhausen also co-wrote the introduction and one of the essays, ‘The quest for Christ: William Holman Hunt and the writing of artistic motivation’.
