Additional information

This paper reports outcome of a major 3-year EPSRC project funded through Cranfield University Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre (IMRC-51) involving 2 full-time researchers and 2 investigators. Gao was the principal investigator and acted as co-investigator (officially and effectively) after he left Cranfield during the project. The ideas and results have been taken by Rolls-Royce for further development within its ‘Standard Feature Initiative’ (peter.hill@rolls-royce.com), and by Edwards Vacuum in its manufacturing knowledge base under a web-based product design process model with on-site support of the researchers (mohamad.kalta@edwardsvacuum.com ). Both companies continued to support the researchers in follow-up projects.
