This is 125,000-word monograph was researched and written with external funding over 2005-12 with external funding from (1) a BECAS MAE (Spanish foreign office grant) 2005 and (2) an AHRC Research Fellowship 2011.
I propose double-weighting: its emphasis on social mobility and middlebrow culture necessiated immersion in a number of areas of film, historical and theoretical scholarly literature. It is especially wide-ranging, with close analysis of 42 texts drawn from a century of cultural activity: 1910-2010.
