A historiographical analysis of the scholarship on bracteates (golden pendants): starting with the categories and interpretations of 19th-century research, the chapter analyses the impact of methodological and theoretical developments in early medieval archaeology since the 19th century on the understanding of these objects – from archaeology and runology, to comparative religious studies, art history and onomastics, and from typology to iconology. Comments on areas of interpretation that remain controversial, such as the relation of bracteates to literary texts.
