Additional information

This study examined clinical performance of ceramic-on-metal hip replacements, invented and developed at the University of Leeds in collaboration with DePuy International (GIsaac@its.jnj.com). This study was conducted in collaboration with clinicians from South Africa and industry co-authors. The clinical data continued to show reduced metal ion levels compared to metal-on-metal at 2 years. To date approximately 15000 of these bearings have been implanted worldwide, 1600 in UK and has demonstrated 97% survivorship at 3 years, (National Joint Registry Report 2012), which is substantially better than metal-on-metal. This study is important in supporting its continued clinical use worldwide.
