Additional information

In this work, the microfluidic emulsion droplet formation technique was employed to produce capsular structures by self-assembly. The combination of nano (self-assembly) and microscale organization (microfluidics) enabled us to obtain hollow microcapsules, obviating the need for core removal, like in the approach of layer-by-layer assembly on colloidal templates. This work was presented at the XXXVIII Annual European Society for Artificial Organs (ESAO) and IV Biennial International Federation on Artificial Organs (IFAO) Congress (Porto, Portugal, 2011) as oral communication and also in invited lectures (University of Minho, Portugal; University of Strathclyde, UK).
