Additional information

This paper arose from Leverhulme Trust Research Grant (Ref RPG-278, £221,415, 2012-15) held by S. Boscolo. The outcomes were used in 3 subsequent journal papers including invited review papers 10.1155/2012/159057 and 10.1016/j.yofte.2012.06.009, and various conference presentations including invited talks at the SAOT Workshop on All-Optical Signal Regeneration, International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks, and International Workshop on Spatio-Temporal Complexity in Optical Fibers. This and related research led to the editing of a Special Issue in the International Journal of Optics by S. Boscolo and the invitation to S. Boscolo to co-author a monograph (Wiley&Sons).
