Surface characteristics of polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane modified clay and its application in polymerization of macrocyclic polyester oligomers
This paper is the output of a TSB-funded project to deliver polymer nano-composites for biomedical devices. The project had four industrial partners including Advanced Surface Polymers Ltd., AK Industry Ltd., Rondol Technology Ltd., and UK Materials Technology Research Institute Ltd. The work reported in this paper led to a technology patent (WO2011086354). The paper reported on the initiation of polymerisation and exfoliation of the clay leading to benefits in production efficiency. Polymerisation temperature was shown to be decreased by 20 °C leading to valuable saving in energy costs.
