Additional information

This paper presents a novel approach to the immoblisation of biomolecules onto biosensors, an approach which was patented by co-authors Suarez and McNeil (WO 2007007052 A2; US 20100285561 A1; Immobilisation of Biological Molecules). The approach generates a thin (micrometer thick) porous structure on the surface which allows for penetration of biomolecules into the structure, and the paper demonstrates that this increases the level of biological activity. This research contributed significantly to the development of the case for support for the newly awarded £11M EPSRC Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Early-Warning Sensing Systems for Infectious Diseases (EP/K031953/1).
