Feed-forward true carrier extraction of high baud rate phase shift keyed signals using photonic modulation stripping and low-bandwidth electronics
Significance of output:
This paper reports the invention, demonstration, (and subsequent patenting 09655-P042057GB, filed: 16/6/2011) of a unique and modulation-scalable scheme that allows optical processing of modern coherent digital communications data streams. Unlike any other method published, it has virtually unlimited bandwidth (>THz), precision (<1Hz carrier frequency error), low energy consumption (slow electronics only) and allows processing directly in the optical domain, avoiding all limitations of high speed electronics. This work secured an EPSRC Early Career Fellowship (2012-2017, EP/K003038/1, £949k),and a PhD student J. Kakande (2nd co-author) was awarded a Marconi Society Young Scholar Award (http://www.marconisociety.org/press/2011youngscholars.html) for work in this topic area.
