Significance of output:

Spatial multiplexing remains the only option to satisfy accelerating internet demand. Doubling the number of fibres installed every two years is unattractive, so various multicore/multimode fibre designs have emerged. Our unique approach is borrowed from electrical multi-strand cable practice and is a strippable/separable array of miniature fibres in a common polymer jacket having similar diameter to a conventional fibre. Our invention (US2012314279) is already used by the two leading fibre laser companies (SPI Lasers, IPG) and here (funded by Programme Grant EP/I01196X/1, £7,288,218, 2010-16) has been applied to telecommunications fibres and amplifiers.
