British Cinema and Middlebrow Culture in the Interwar Years
This nominated book (239pp) took five years to research, and meets four of the criteria for double weighting. It develops a complex thesis that ranges across literary, cinematic, television and theatrical history, at both an institutional and aesthetic level. It is embedded in extensive primary research across film, newspaper, publishing, and broadcasting archives, trade papers and special collections materials. The book synthesizes this considerable body of material (both published and unpublished) into an argument that has been recognized as a model of interdisciplinary research and an influential intervention into discussions of taste and taste culture of the period.
