Additional information

This paper extends the field of extreme value statistics (which is usually applied to univariate, unimodal problems) to multivariate, multimodal distributions for the first time. The paper was awarded the Abbey-Santander prize by the University of Oxford, and the overall best paper prize in the IEEE (EMBS) Biosignals conference in which it was originally presented in 2010. It resulted in the award of a Research Fellowship from Mansfield College, Oxford and a start-up grant from the Balliol Interdisciplinary Institute. It formed the basis for a patent application made by Isis Innovation (WO 2011/023924 A1), currently at PCT stage.
