Additional information

Building on earlier work that showed in rats, controls, and epilepsy patients that [11-C]CNS5161 was a promising PET tracer for imaging activated NMDA channels, this paper employed the same novel tracer to provide the first evidence of excessive glutamate neurotransmission in Parkinson’s disease leading to specific pathophysiological effects. Hammers provided the scan acquisition and analysis methodology, while patients were recruited by Brooks. This work suggests new therapeutic avenues and has led to a collaboration with GE which has generated an improved 18-F labelled tracer [McGinnity, J Nucl Med, 2013].
