Additional information

A novel computational method for defining and visualizing cerebral cortex by diffusion magnetic resonance imaging was used to quantify microstructural cortical growth in a group of preterm and term infants. It demonstrated specific regional patterns of neurite growth, and showed that reduced cortical development following preterm delivery predicts reduced cognitive ability in later childhood. This method is scalable, and will allow the study of cortical development in neurodevelopmental disorders such as Autism and Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder. It was published in a major general scientific journal.
