English abstract

This essay examines the role of the dream in the work of Hélène Cixous and Jacques Derrida via Freud. It shows that in Freud’s description of ‘dreamwork’ is hidden a theory of writing: the inscription of a signified ‘content’ in the coded form of a system of signifiers. Furthermore, Freud surreptitiously deconstructs the dreamwork/dream-analysis border: rather than decoding it, psychoanalysis continues the dream. A powerful classical opposition – between theory and practice, critical analysis and artistic invention – is thus irrevocably shaken. These insights into Freud, informed by Derrida, shed light on Cixous’s writing, where philosophy and poetry collaborate beguilingly.
