This sole-authored 120,000 word monograph provides an original perspective on the history of war and militarization since the creation of France’s first large-scale permanent military base in 1857. It has a substantial empirical base and is the result of extensive research in French archives (both local and national), as well as visits to military bases and former battlefields. Drawing on Actor Network Theory, Mobilizing Nature contributes to the growing fields of the environmental history of war and military geographies through an account of the military mobilization of nonhumans in modern France.
