For this scholarly new edition of Burroughs’ early novel (written in 1952 but not published until 1985), Harris went back to the original manuscripts to revise, restructure, and expand the previously printed text. This involved archival research in institutions across the US, from Columbia in New York to Stanford in California. As well as restoring the author’s text, Harris contributed a 40 page (words) Editor’s Introduction and 14 pages (words) of textual end notes.
