Collier, whose research focuses on art walking informed painting, created a series of paintings based on a curated a series of five guided walks over four weekends (December 2012- March 2013) along a 45-mile route through one of the northeast’s most beautiful but least appreciated and understood landscapes. Inspired by renowned naturalist and author of The History of the Birds of Durham (1951), George W. Temperley (1875-1967) Collier used the process to inform his paintings, arguing that walking through a landscape with others over a long period of time encourages discussion about a range of subjects to do with the experience of a place that would not normally occur. Supported by a Heritage Lottery Award, the walking project involved over 100 participants. The series of paintings, which incorporate perceptions of the participants in the walks and selected elements of Temperley’s diaries, were exhibited at The Custom’s House, as part of a solo exhibition In Resilience of the Wild: New Work and Art-Walks, June 2013. The work was also used as a case study for a co-authored paper with Prof. Kevin Hannam, ‘In Temperley’s Tread – Theorising Walking, Art Landscape and Knowledge in the Durham Countryside’ presented at the Active Countryside Tourism conference, University of Leeds January 2013.
