<26>TVCG is a top five Graphics journal according to Microsoft Academic Search. This paper explains how to classify regions segmented from an image into qualitative shapes. Here used to process photographs into art exemplified by Matisse and Kandinsky, it laid the foundation for work that pushed abstraction into Miro-, Picasso- and even child-like art (CAe 2013). It provides a robust region description, which has strongly influenced our work in classification where we have shown these shapes can be used to classify scene type (BMVC 2012), and are “prime” in the sense that objects can be constructed from them (BMVC 2013).
