Additional information
This paper was the result of an international collaboration that involved two of the world’s leading authorities on the use of solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy in mineralogy and cement science (R.J. Kirkpatrick, Michigan State University; J. Skibsted, Aarhus University). It is the first paper to demonstrate compositional heterogeneity in supposedly single-phase calcium silicate hydrates that had been synthesised by a standard technique (by a different group); this result has serious implications for the large number of studies where the homogeneity has not been checked.
