Photoworks invited Heron to develop ‘Visible Economies’ as part of the Brighton Photo Biennial 2012. The symposium and the subsequent book explored visual narratives from six photographic artists and included three critical texts about cities and economies. Heron’s essay, ‘Economies of Visibility’, explores the use of photography as social documentary driven by economic crises. Heron discusses works by Emma Charles and Anna Fox, rereading their work politically and socially with reference to early definitions of documentary (Grierson, 1926) and in contrast to more recent photographic and theoretical work concerned primarily with aesthetics and realism (Cousins, 2006; Green, 2009).
