Octo: Sotto Voce
Octo: Sotto Voce, an 8-channel sound installation presenting an audio montage of whispered voices, draws on David Chapman’s interest in the relationship between digitalization and documentary, and the role of sound in fine art practice. In Octo; Sotto Voce, the whispered prayer, the respectful tone or the irreverent aside are characteristic of the voice hushed to convey private conversations that are not intended for widespread dissemination. The installation was produced for I Hear Too - Live, a group sound-art event in York Minster. The work was originally designed and installed in the octagonal Chapter House on 7 October 2009. It was subsequently re-installed in the Lady Chapel, in York Minster, as part of Minster Nights event on 9 January 2010. The project was commissioned and funded by ‘I Hear Too - Improving Heritage Experience through Acoustic Reality and Audio Research’, an AHRC/EPSRC Science/Heritage Research Cluster initiated by Dr. Damian Murphy of the Intelligent Systems Group/Audio Lab research group at the University of York. Both events were open to the public.
