Point process modelling of the Afghan War Diary
This paper was awarded the 2012 PNAS Cozzarelli Prize (Engineering and Applied Sciences category), an annual award that acknowledges “papers that reflect scientific excellence and originality” (http://www.pnas.org/site/misc/cozzarelliprize.xhtml). It was a break-through paper that provided a data driven framework for modelling spatiotemporal dynamics from event data and the first to provide a highly quantitative modelling of conflict dynamics. The research attracted media interest, notably in Science News (http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/342322/description/Afghanistan_on_240_incidents_a_week) and Los-Angeles Times in the US. The software was also provided for evaluation upon request to NATO mission in Afghanistan (Kyle Pizzey, International Security Assistance Force Fusion Cell Chief).
