A nano-indentation study of the reduced elastic modulus of Alq3 and NPB thin-film used in OLED devices
This study continues the work on mechanical stability of thin multilayer structures. Whilst the important moduli of elasticity are known for conventional metal, ceramic and polymer materials, they are completely unknown for the classes of new single-molecule organic/organometallic materials. Nano-indentation studies are performed on thin films of two common OLED materials to show how these quantities can be obtained. The report teaches that for such materials, a knowledge of these quantities for the already-established mechanical modelling/analysis is mandatory for assessing the minimum bending radii in a manufacturing process, or end use in a flexible device.
