English abstract

The article focuses on the end of World War One as an accepted rupture (end or starting point) in European history. By stressing various continuities across 1918, it questions historians’ focus on macro events as well as concepts of periodization which all too often are determined by the national level. Taking a transnational perspective that seeks to bring in both local and global scales, the article argues that 1918 could also be seen as a transitional moment of longer term rearrangement of ‘regimes of territoriality’.
