Additional information

<25> This article reports study of changes to the location of the phase transition in the Ising model of a magnet when small-world spatial shortcuts or wormholes are introduced as might occur in polycrystalline systems. Our use of graphical processing units and a highly optimised parallel algorithm let us explore multi-scale regimes previously inaccessible to simulation. This has prompted a search for similar phenomena in other models over similarly logarithmic scales. The Ising model is a standard benchmark problem used widely in condensed matter physics, and we achieved significantly faster speedup performance than a well-known supercomputing group in Germany.
