Additional information

The journal article presents the culmination of a three year €3.6 million FP7 EU 3D VIVANT project (FP7 IST-7-248420-STREP). Tsekleves was a co-investigator and contributor to the project, leading two works packages as well as the administrative management of the project, contributing to 15 public deliverable reports in addition to this article.

The project conducted research into the design and development of the next generation 3D glass free technology (holoscopic) for entertainment purposes. This led to the creation of Europe’s first holoscopic camera and display as well as several tools for holoscopic content processing, such as a video codec and search and retrieval on holoscopic 3D content.

The project was multi-disciplinary in nature and comprised of nine partners from six European countries. The consortium included two universities, two research centres, three public broadcasters, including the European Broadcast Union and two companies, including Europe’s leading company for high-end film digital video camera production, ARRI.

The work presented in this paper was featured by the British Cinematographer, in a special report about the Future of cinematography (http://britishcinematographer.co.uk/articles/313-special-report-the-future-of-cinematography.html ) the Huffington Post (http://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/jonathan-tustain/3d-tv-glasses_b_1817960.html ) and a BBC R&D white paper on the holographic future (http://www.3dfocus.co.uk/3d-news-2/3d-technology/bbc-rd-white-paper-details-holographic-future/6468 ).
