Additional information

The back analysis of the partial collapse of the Bolu tunnels during the 1999 Duzce earthquake was used to validate newly developed numerical algorithms and to critically review seismic design procedures. The numerical model simulated realistically the failure mechanism, highlighted the inadequacy of a widely used analytical solution and suggested a simplified pseudo-static numerical procedure for the seismic design of tunnels. It was awarded the 2008 BGA (British Geotechnical Association) medal and generated significant interest from industry internationally confirmed by numerous invited presentations e.g. PARI, Japan, NGI Norway, short course at ICE (Institution of Civil Engineers) London organised by NAFEMS.
