An investigation of the action of the hamstring muscles during standing using functional electrical stimulation (FES)
Knee joint replacement is an effective means of reducing load in the affected knee, however overloading of the contralateral limb along with muscular co-contraction continue to be problematic. This highlights the need for appropriate post-operative management of these patients, including gait re-education. Key technological development needs have also been identified to facilitate the screening of patients. The work described within was selected up for the best paper award at the 2011 ESMAC conference, the best poster award at BASK 2011 (British Association for Surgery of the Knee) and a Best of the Best presentation at the British Orthopaedic Association meeting 2012.
