Double-weighted statement

Research for this book took over four years and combined extensive field work in the Canadian Arctic, the Arctic Ocean and Tasmania with archival work in the UK, Canada and Australia, linking histories of science, exploration, arctic travel, naval operations, colonial government and memorialisation. It addresses two major themes, each requiring extensive research: the career of Captain Sir John Franklin FRS, and the development of terrestrial magnetic science in theoretical and applied forms, placed in the context of nineteenth century British Imperial policy.
