Free Triiodothyronine Has a Distinct Circadian Rhythm That Is Delayed but Parallels Thyrotropin Levels
Signal modelling revealed, for first time, the circadian release of thyroid hormones & that nightime rise in triiodothyronine is most potent at night. This led to patent application (PCT/GB2008/001433), filed by Diurnal Ltd (contact: Chief Executive Officer at martinwhitaker@diurnal.co.uk). Invention: polymer-engineered release mechanism for matching rhythm to improve therapy and quality-of-life. Underactive thyroid affects approximately 5% of over 60s and 25% of patients on thyroxine therapy have impaired quality-of-life. Diurnal Ltd has raised over £3M, has been awarded, with Sheffield University, an additional €4.2M to develop endocrine therapies & has products in Phase 1 clinical trial.
