Another Shadow Fight
This work is a suite of 8 digitally reproduced wood-cut prints. The process of digital reproduction produces a reading of the image that deliberately displaces the reading of one primary print form into another more general, less specific medium. This work affects the process of simulation, by placing emphasis on the reproducibility of the artwork and its relationship within the context of the everyday. The work consists of a self-produced serif font on a black ground to articulate familiar but fractured narratives and to consider the depiction of word in relation to image and vice versa. In this way, the work draws upon particular modes of linguistic and visual aesthetic familiarity that appear to pre-exist as a contemporary approximation toward a reproduced and wholly speculative historical context (concrete poetry, dada, surrealism, modernism etc). The work aims to produce a distortion of the ‘contemporary’ moment that may allude to an alternative reading of established historiography.
The work was widely disseminated at a number of venues, including The Modern Institute, Glasgow. 2012, Embassy Gallery, Edinburgh. 2010, Culturegest, Porto. 2009, International Print Biennial, Laing Art Gallery, Newcastle Upon Tyne. 2009, International Project Space, Birmingham, University of Central England. 2008
