Edelman, Joshua 'Performing Religion in Public', co-edited introduction and authored chapter 'The Intolerable, Intimate Public of Contemporary American Street Preaching'

100 words research statement (co-authored edited collection)

This book emerged from a panel on public preaching which I organised for PSi #16, bringing on my future co-editors as co-panelists. Out of our papers and the discussion around them, we realised that a performative paradigm would make an important contribution to ongoing debates about the role of religion in public discourse. The three of us researched and refined this argument for the editors’ introduction, which was written in such tight collaboration that it is no longer apparent who contributed which section. I also contributed my own chapter and coordinated and edited the dialogue for part two.
