Additional information

Ti-13Nb-13Zr is a new biomedical alloy, replacing Ti-6Al-4V, as it offers excellent corrosion properties, improved biocompatibility and an elastic modulus similar to bone. This paper is having a strong impact (18 citations) as it provides the first detailed characterisation of the native oxide formed on Ti-13Nb-13Zr and a facile methodology for improving the nucleation of hydroxyapatite onto the Ti-13Nb-13Zr surface through immersion in a solution of minimal essential medium (MEM) + H2O2. This surface treatment gives rise to a nanocomposite structure comprised of hydrated TiO2 with island-like regions of hydroxyapatite and amino acids which will strongly promote osseointegration.
