Additional information

The paper presents the first results of assessing the dielectric and surface roughness properties of materials observed by SAR techniques and full electro-magnetic modelling using single images. This new technique greatly simplifies such analyses. The results confirmed that accurate assessments can be determined remotely, which has major application in the study of soil properties (soil moisture), and the condition of the built environment (post-disaster assessment). The work was undertaken in conjunction with DLR and TUM in Germany, resulting in further collaboration with groups including the Leibniz Supercomputing Centre and the European Centre for Training and Research in Earthquake Engineering (Italy).
