A novel reaction leads to new donor-acceptor chromophores. This reaction was developed de novo and its range of conditions identified and rationalized. This paper has led ourselves and others to apply this reaction in developing a new class of chromophore-containing materials. Other research groups have since applied this reaction to build a range of new functional molecular materials.
